Community Hero May 2025: Break it Down

Welcome to Biobag's Community Heroes series!

Each month, we will highlight community heroes that are making a difference in their communities and working to make their local environments cleaner and healthier.

This month, we are taking a look at Break it Down in TX!

Break it Down is a composting and recycling service based in Austin, TX. They have a unique facility where they can then process the differing food wastes using dehydration or a biochar retort to achieve specific materials. Biobag Associate spoke to with Thalia Bachmann-Padilla, Sr. Waste Diversion Manager, at Break it Down about the organization. Their interview is transcribed below.

What led you to start your composting operation?

While working at a South Austin yoga studio, co-owner Melanie noticed that the compostable cups used for chai tea were being discarded in the trash rather than composted. These cups would end up in landfills, and instead of breaking down, would contribute to methane emissions released from landfills. Unable to find a composting service catering to small businesses, she and her husband Jeff decided to take matters into their own hands. With nothing more than a truck and determination, they launched Break it Down, driven by a vision to transform food waste into valuable resources. Overcoming early funding challenges, the company has grown into a leading composting and recycling provider for businesses in Austin, Waco, and San Antonio. Today, Break it Down lives up to its tagline, Composting, and Beyond, by innovatively repurposing organic materials.

Who do you serve and how can people get in touch with you if they want to start composting?

Break it Down provides commercial composting services along the I-35 corridor, from Waco to San Antonio, with our headquarters based in Austin, TX. We proudly service over 1,000 businesses, including restaurants, hotels, offices, breweries, multifamily communities (such as apartments and condos), and commissaries. To start composting with us, you can reach us via email at sales@breakitdownaustin.com or complete the inquiry form on our website: https://breakitdowntexas.com/inquiry-form/.

How much organic material do you typically take in on a weekly basis?

We divert over 15 tons of food waste per day from landfills. That's over 100 tons of compost a week!

’’
There are so many ways to more effectively use organics than just tossing them out. Not with a lot of fluff, or schmoozing, or greenwashing; but with hard work and dirty hands, to truly make an impact.

Feel free to add any additional information about your operation as you see fit.

In 2024, Break it Down launched the first-ever hair-to-fertilizer recycling program! “Composting and Beyond” means reimagining waste, and our hair recycling journey proves it! @Rootshairchar began when a researcher asked us to compost hair clippings. Even in windrow composting, the hair wouldn’t break down. So we innovated! Now, partnering with salons and dog groomers, we transform discarded hair into Hairchar—a nutrient-rich biochar created through pyrolysis. The result? A nitrogen-packed plant fertilizer that closes the loop on hair waste and improves soil to help plants thrive.
