Community Hero June 2025: Renewal Compost

Welcome to Biobag's Community Heroes series!

Each month, we will highlight community heroes that are making a difference in their communities and working to make their local environments cleaner and healthier.

This month, we are taking a look at Renewal Compost in New Hampshire!

Renewal Compost is a residential, commercial, and event composting service based in Greater Manchester area of New Hampshire. They have curbside pickup in Auburn, Bedford, Chester, Concord, Derry, Hudson, Manchester, Merrimack, New London, Raymond, and Windham. They also have drop offs in Amherst, Bow, Concord, Goffstown, Hooksett, Londonderry, New Boston, and New London. The nutrient-rich soil that they create provides backyards with bountiful vegetable gardens, and helps farms throughout NH. Their mission of closing the loop includes putting nutrients back into the soil, and supporting local agriculture. Biobag Associate spoke to with Meagan and Lou Saviano at Renewal Compost about the organization. Their interview is transcribed below.

What led you to start your composting operation?

My wife and I were working on a local farm, and while there began talking about ways to start our own business in this line of work. We thought back to a compost pickup service we had used in college, and realized no one was currently servicing Manchester or Concord, NH. We decided to see if it could be a viable business, first servicing a few neighbors out of our back yard, and before we knew it our business, Renewal Compost, grew and we needed to begin hauling to a farm! Four years later, we are excited to say this business has really taken off and we are very appreciative to all our customers for their support and how much fun it has been getting this from an idea into a reality!

Who do you serve and how can people get in touch with you if they want to start composting?

We serve anyone who generates food waste; homeowners, restaurants, businesses, schools and town transfer stations. Please visit our website, www.renewalcompost.com, and from there you will see all our options for compost.

How much organic material do you typically take in on a weekly basis?

We haul approximately 1.5 tons per week of organic material.

’’
Renewal = A New Real. Much like the phrase "Close the Loop" our business name, "Renewal" is cyclical. Food is prepared/eaten, food waste created, food waste composted, compost used to grow food, pick new food, eat the food, and on and on it goes.

Feel free to add any additional information about your operation as you see fit.

We have seen the craziest backyard compost attempts, from barrels full of water and food, to abandoned tumblers, and 'darth vader style' compost bins stuck underneath decks, and even indoor composting. Needless to say, we have helped remove compost setups of all shapes and sizes, and hope our home pickup program is the desired outcome of both ease and knowing your waste is being composted.
