Community Hero January 2025: Midtown Composting

Welcome to Biobag's Community Heroes series!

Each month, we will highlight community heroes that are making a difference in their communities and working to make their local environments cleaner and healthier.

This month, we are taking a look at Midtown Composting in MI!

Midtown Composting is a hauling service based in Detroit MI, with their subscription services available in the Detroit Metropolitan Area. They offer a wide range of services including residential food waste composting, business food waste composting, event food waste composting, one time residential food waste pick ups, yard waste pick ups, residential recycling, and business and event recycling. Biobag Associate spoke to Michael with Midtown Composting about the organization. Their interview is transcribed below.

What led you to start your composting operation?

We don’t compost, we haul to our partners who do the composting for us. But, why I do this is it’s fundamentally important, it’s as foundational as it gets, and we’re also passionate about helping people grow healthy food with our compost too.

Who do you serve and how can people get in touch with you if they want to start composting?

We serve Metro Detroit, go to midtowncomposting.com

How much organic material do you typically take in on a weekly basis?

We haul 15-20 yards a week.

’’
We have diverted more than 3 million lbs of food waste since we started a few years ago, and we will haul more than a million lbs in 2025!

Feel free to add any additional information about your operation as you see fit.

Kristina Manolescu owns Midtown Composting & Recycling Co.

Tim Campbell started Midtown Composting & Sustainability Solutions LLC in 2015. A few years later Tim partnered with Michael Edwards (Kristina’s husband). Tim handled business services and Michael did the residential pickups. After nearly a year of working together Tim and Michael separated the businesses.

Midtown Composting & Recycling Co. was incorporated in 2020. Before the paperwork was done Michael said to Kristina, “I think this could be big, and I’m gonna need your help. What can I do to insure you’ll put out tons of effort and be fully invested in this?”

Kristina responded, “I want to own this one.”

“How much?”

“All of it. At least at first.”

Tim has since sold his business. Kristina became the owner of Midtown Composting.
