Block Bins is a composting service based in Chicago, IL, who believes compost and recycling options should be accessible and ubiquitous. Their mission is to make compost & recycling options accessible and affordable in cities and suburbs. Biobag Associate spoke to with Chief Marketing Officer, Kyle Preuss, at Block Bins about the organization. Their interview is transcribed below.

What led you to start your composting operation?

Blocks Bins was created to bring Chicagoland residents & businesses an affordable and comprehensive structure to recycle their food scraps. We believe in an opt-in composting program where residents and businesses who would like to start composting without a large initial cost or government tax burden. Before Block Bins existed there was no scalable solution to bring equitable composting services to all Chicagoland residents.

Who do you serve and how can people get in touch with you if they want to start composting?

How much organic material do you typically take in on a weekly basis?

38,000 lbs of organic material per week!

Food scraps that are recycled within the Chicago city limits by our subscribers stay within the city throughout the entire process and contribute to local Chicago soil health. They are delivered, processed and used right here in Chicago!

Our partners Green Era Campus, located in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood of Chicago process our food scraps through their state of the art anaerobic digestion system. Once processed the non-profit Urban Growers Collective here in Chicago is able to utilize as much as the finished product as needed to support their eight urban farms on 11 acres of land in Chicago.
