Inspiration for a compostable future

Different countries have different waste infrastructures. Composting conditions vary and not all certifications are built around the same assumptions. That’s why understanding compostable certifications is less about recognising a logo and more about understanding what sits behind it.

The EU continues to strengthen its approach to waste and circular economy. On paper, this makes sense. But in practice, it raises a more difficult question: what does it actually take to make waste systems work?

London-based startup Aeropowder created Pluumo, a high-performance insulation material that turns surplus feather waste into a sustainable alternative to polystyrene.

Soil underpins our food systems and biodiversity, yet 60–70% in the EU is unhealthy. Each year a billion tons erode, costing agriculture about €1.25 billion.
