Each month, we will highlight community heroes that are making a difference in their communities and working to make their local environments cleaner and healthier.
This month, we are taking a look at Black Bear Compost in VA!

Black Bear Composting is an organics recycling company located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. They help local businesses, organizations and residents reduce their waste stream by recycling their organic materials (food scraps, yard trimmings, and clean waste wood) into products for healthy soil. The Biobag team connected with Eric Walter to tell us more about the organization. Read their responses below.
What led you to start your composting operation?
Black Bear started to focus on diverting local food scraps from the landfill. Composting is a simple and effective way to do so.

Who do you serve and how can people get in touch with you if they want to start composting?
We service businesses, organizations and residences in the greater Charlottesville, Virginia area, as well as the central Shenandoah Valley. Sign-up info can be found on our website.
How much organic material do you typically take in on a weekly basis?
We take in about 70 tons a week.
Feel free to add any additional information about your operation as you see fit.
All of our inbound material and outbound finished product stay within our 50 mile service area. About a fifth of the finished compost we produce gets returned to our commercial and residential customers as part of the service.
