Each month, we will highlight community heroes that are making a difference in their communities and working to make their local environments cleaner and healthier.
This month, we are taking a look at Black Earth Compost in MA!

Black Earth Compost is a composting service based in MA. Biobag Associate spoke to Conor with Black Earth Compost about the organization. Their interview is transcribed below.
What led you to start your composting operation?
I lived in Seattle and had curbside compost and thought this should be in MA because composting is important for reducing waste and growing food.
Black Earth Compost was founded in January 2011, in Gloucester, MA. Originally a one man, one truck, Cape Ann company, it has steadily grown to become the leading full service compost company in New England. With over 35 trucks, we are dedicated to collecting food scraps from residents, schools, supermarkets, colleges, and more, all across eastern MA, RI and NH. We are also the only vertically integrated company that composts the material too, returning it to customers and selling it in garden centers throughout New England. Whatever your organic waste collection or garden soil needs, we are your one stop shop.

Who do you serve and how can people get in touch with you if they want to start composting?
We serve eastern MA commercial stops and residents. You can sign up on our website.
How much organic material do you typically take in on a weekly basis?
We collect about 180 tons/week.
Feel free to add any additional information about your operation as you see fit.
We are a proud member of the Composting Consortium - leading the nation in composting infrastructure, innovation and compostable packaging progress.
Conor Miller, CE0 and Andrew Brousseau, Partner and Chief Composter recently interviewed along with Sharon Kishida, former MA DEP Northeast Regional Municipal Coordinator, on Cape Ann's TOWNGREEN Nature Wins Podcast. The episode, Cape Ann's Waste Story, goes into the state of waste in Massachusetts and how composting helps tackle the current problems we face.
